Developmental Milestones from Ages 1 to 5: A Parent Checklist
📚
Developmental milestones are guideposts, not rigid deadlines. Children grow at different speeds, but consistent gaps across speech, movement, play, or self-care deserve attention. Use this checklist as a conversation starter with your pediatric team.
Around Age 1 - Pulls to stand and may take first steps - Waves bye-bye and responds to their name - Babbles with varied sounds; may say mama/dada meaningfully - Explores objects by shaking, banging, or dropping them
Around Age 2 - Walks steadily and begins to run - Uses about 50 words and starts combining two words - Copies everyday actions in play (feeding a doll, talking on a phone) - Shows independence — wanting to do things "myself"
Around Age 3 - Climbs, kicks a ball, and pedals a ride-on toy - Speaks in short sentences understood by familiar adults - Plays near or with other children; takes turns with support - Begins simple self-care: washing hands, putting on easy clothes
Around Ages 4–5 - Hops, balances briefly, and catches a large ball - Tells short stories and answers simple "why" questions - Cooperates in group play and follows classroom-style routines - Draws basic shapes, holds a crayon with better control, and manages more dressing tasks
When To Seek Support Contact a specialist if your child loses skills they once had, is far behind peers in speech or motor skills, avoids social engagement, or shows extreme sensory distress. Early screening at Origin can identify strengths, clarify needs, and connect your family to speech, OT, behavioral, or special education support.
